"The Effects of Voting Rights Extension on and Human Stature".
The effect of democracy on health and wellbeing has been found to be unclear in the economics literature. The extension of voting rights and transitions to democracy to the population provide a quasi-natural experiment to examine their effects on relevant sources of welfare, and specifically one of its retrospective virtuous pointers: human stature. Heights are found to be sensitive to changes in psycho-social environments. We find robust evidence of voting rights extension (enfranchisement) and democracy indexes on European historical human stature data. Our causal estimates stem from controlling for countries' and years' fixed effects and to adding an instrumental variable strategy that exploits the change in the colonial structure of European for the period considered. We find that transitions to democracy have positive, relevant, and statistically significant effects on human stature.
