Paolo Atzeni (Rome, 1957) graduated cum laude in Electronic Engineering in 1980 and he was a Researcher at the CNR from 1983 to 1987, Associate Professor at the University of Naples from 1987 to 1990 , then Full Professor of Information Processing Systems at Sapienza University of Rome from 1990 and he has had the same position at Roma Tre University since 1992.
His research has covered various topics related to databases and information systems, such as equivalence of relational databases, basics of relational database theory, languages for conceptual databases, database design tools, universal relation interfaces, formal properties of knowledge bases, complex object data models, heterogeneous data models and pattern transformation, database system cooperation, databases and World Wide Web, Big Data.
He carried out a number of research activities at the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Toronto, Microsoft Research and the National University of Singapore.
He was President of the EDBT Association (1997-2005) and Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the VLDB Endowment (2010-2012). Since September 2017, he has been President of the Italian Information Engineering Group (GII), the association that brings together over 700 Italian professors in the scientific disciplinary sector ING-INF/05.
At Roma Tre he was Coordinator of the Degree Course in Computer Engineering (1994-2000), member and then Vice-President of the Assessment Unit (1998-2012), Director of the Engineering Department (2013-2017), Coordinator of the Academic Senate Teaching Commission (2016-2017).
Since 8th November 2017, he has been Vice-Rector for Teaching.
