21001993 - HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE 1

The course proposes an overview of the architecture of the past, providing tools to analyze and understand the historical reasons and assess its quality. To this end, students are asked to examine the architectures selected focusing on the reasons of their construction in a specific time and place, what were the objectives of the client, the builder and the architect, how and why certain techniques and specific materials have been chosen, what relationship these buildings have with the architectures of the past and those contemporary to them, considering how these aspects are related to each other, reconstructing the design process, when it is sufficiently documented. In the first year the chosen buildings are the ones deemed most significant, including during the time span from the classical age extended to the sixteenth century.

Type of delivery of the course

Lectures, seminars, conferences, and lectures on site. Details and communications will be uploaded on http://corsiarchitettura.uniroma3.it/mattei/index.php/lezioni/
In case of an extension of containment measures related to the COVID-19 emergency, lectures and seminars will be delivered on the platform Microsoft Teams.

Attendance

Frequency (75% at least) is highly recommended. If it is not possible, students are invited to contact the professor by the end of October (francesca.mattei@uniroma3.it).

Type of evaluation

I will grade the final oral exam and two intermediate written tests. More detailed information will be delivered during the course Every student has to develop a detailed study on the topic "Living in Papal Rome. Palaces, Villas, Castles, Fortresses", dedicated to the analysis of one building, decided together with the professor. The list of topics will be delivered during the first class.

The final exam will begin with the discussion of the topic of the detailed study and it will continue with questions on the program.

To pass the exam, students are required to demonstrate that they have acquired a critical knowledge of the program and that they are able to use a proper specific language. The questions will be taken from the books listed in the bibliography and from the topics discussed in the course. I will grade the knowledge of the general and specific bibliography and the capability to discuss the program.
Please, find more detailed information at http://corsiarchitettura.uniroma3.it/mattei Students with disabilities or students with SLD Students with disabilities or with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), accredited to the Service Center for disabled students and students with SLD, can apply directly to the professor, or through the Department’s delegate for disability/SLD, to decide on how to carry out the intermediate tests or the examinations. In case of an extension of containment measures related to the COVID-19 emergency, the final exam will be on the platform Microsoft Teams. The intermediate written tests must be carried out as classroom-based exams: if it would not be possible, they will be canceled. Graphic activities will be strongly encouraged.

Attendance

Attendance to lessons is mandatory.

Type of evaluation

THE TEST IS ORAL AND INDIVIDUAL. The exam will be held in the classroom or (in case of Covid-19 emergency) on the Microsoft Teams platform. The candidate will be tested about 3 questions on the topics of the lectures, for example Architecture of Panellenic Sanctuaries; Theaters and amphitheaters in Rome; Gothic architecture in Italy; Leon Battista Alberti; Roman palaces in the sixteenth century; etc. Instead, the buildings of the ACROPOLIS OF ATHENS and the IMPERIAL FORES, as well as the lecture theme buildings, such as the Pantheon or St. Peter's Basilica, are specifically requested. There are no intermediate tests / mid-term exams. THE STUDENT’S KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS WILL BE EVALUATED, ALSO BASED ON THEIR CAPACITY TO REFER TO A HISTORIC FRAME, AND ANALYSE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE MOST RELEVANT MONUMENTS OF EACH HISTORIC PERIOD THROUGH SCHEMATIC DRAWINGS. FOR THE EXAMINATION, THE STUDENT MAY USE HIS NOTES, DRAWINGS OR COLLECTION OF IMAGES. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO ATTEND THE LESSON, AND THE WALKING LECTURES, TO FACILITATE THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFERENT TOPICS.
