The course aims to provide students with an in-depth analysis of the study of the lexicon and semantics. The study will concentrate on the categories of noun and verb in particular. Their specific properties and differences in terms of structure and meaning will be discussed. Part of the course will be devoted to the study of the aspectual semantics of the verb.
At the end of the course the students will be able to analyze words on the basis of all the structural and semantic properties on which the course focuses.

The theoretical section will introduce the following themes: word classes and lexical information, basic concepts in semantics and theories on meaning, structure in predicate and arguments (nouns and verbs), verb temporal and aspectual information, combinations of, and interactions between, words.
The applied section, with the help of the tools of information technology, will illustrate the research methodologies in use for linguistic data, in particular for the extraction of words, of combinations of words, and for their different typologies; it will also be devoted to a survey of frequency data which can be drawn from the existing corpora presented in the computer lab.
The applied section will be delivered by Dr. Piunno, expert in Language Technologies and corpus linguistics.
