The Course “General Linguistics 2” (“Syntax”) falls within the domain of the Basic learning activities labelled “Philology, General and Applied Linguistics” of the Degree Course in Languages and Cultural-Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aiming at providing adequate tools for the analysis and the theoretical study of languages and language.
The Course has the aim of providing: advanced competences in the analysis and reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects of syntactic investigation, starting from the correlation between semantic roles and phrasal structure to the interaction between syntax and discourse grammar (information structure and “interfaces”). Reflection and formal analysis will be particularly focused on the curricular languages of students.
Expected learning outcomes: The students will acquire a deeper knowledge on the theoretical aspects and an advanced competence in the methodological tools of formal analysis, through the application of phrasal rules on the languages studied in their degree; they will learn how to provide a formal interpretation of interface and discourse grammar phenomena.

In this respect, special attention will be devoted to the analysis of Case assignment, binding relation, constituent movement and different types of embedded structure (raising, control structures, complements of perception verbs). In the second part the interface between syntax and discourse grammar is approached (“information structure”), with special attention to the syntactic realization of discourse categories such as Focus, Topic and Contrast; their properties will be discussed, also from a comparative perspective.

Given the exit from the state of emergency, if conditions remain as they are, the protocol of 2 May 2022 will be applied, according to which teaching activities will be carried out in presence, allowing remote use only in the event of a positive or isolated Covid situation, duly certified. In particular, the course includes 20 face-to-face lectures in the University's premises (for a total of 40 hours). At the same time, the Moodle platform will be active, where materials, handouts and any in-progress exercises will be provided. The reception will also take place in presence (with scheduled bookings), with the usual weekly frequency (2 hours/week).Attendance
Frequency is highly recommended. No specific program is planned for non-attending students, who are invited to contact the professor in charge.Type of evaluation
