One of the main aims of this Course of Study is the acquisition of competences in two foreign languages, which is based on the development of the four active and passive written-oral skills, to analyse the study of intercultural and transcultural phenomena through the tools and methodologies of linguistic and philological analysis, as well as the theory and practice of translation.
German Language and Translation III is amongst the distinguishing activities of the "Language and translation" area. The aim of the module is to provide students with level B2 and C1 (based on the CEFR) and to enhance their language strategies. It also aims at developing their ability to move in the linguistic context, linked to the theory and practice of translation of different textual genres, also from a transmedia point of view, and to the cultural history of exemplary periods of linguistic history.
Students will be able to put into practice the acquired linguistic and communicative skills (active, passive and mixed); delve deeper in translation problems related to different textual genres, also in a transmedia perspective; interpret reality in a multilingual and multicultural perspective thanks to a strengthened intercultural competence; they will also possess consolidated communicative and argumentative skills.

Programme

Text linguistics and translation
The module introduces the linguistic analysis of textual processes as a prerequisite for a methodologically sound approach to translation. Prototype semantics, the cognitive and pragmatic dimensions of the speech act will be the focus of our reflection on the act of translation, as well as the link between textual typology, types of thematic development and translation strategies. Beyond the textual dimension, we will then address the cultural studies of Diskurslinguistik, inspired by Michel Foucault's Discourse Analysis. Theoretical lectures will alternate with exercises in literary translation from German into Italian, in which different textual varieties will be addressed.

Type of delivery of the course

In presence The classes of the German native-speaker teachers form an integral part of the course and begin at the start of the academic year.

Type of evaluation

At the end of the class, students must pass a written translation test (from german into italian); an oral test about the lectures’ theoretical matters.
