The aim of this course is to deepen the knowledge in cell biology, with special emphasis to the structural organization and to the functions of different compartments of eukaryotic animals cells.
The course is aimed at providing students with the cultural and methodological grounding that allow the critical discussion of the scientific literature in the field of cell biology. a laboratory activity will be organized to promote hands-on experience with various "state of the art" techniques used in modern research.

Programme

Cultural knowledge: the aim of this course is to deepen the knowledge in cell biology, with special emphasis to the structural organization and to the functions of different compartments of eukaryotic animals cells. the course is aimed at providing students with the cultural and methodological grounding that allow the critical discussion of the scientific literature in the field of cell biology. a laboratory activity will be organized to promote hands-on experience with various "state of the art" techniques used in modern research.
Methodological skills: to know how to design an experiment, to acquire and analyze the data obtained from the laboratory activity.
Topics:
the course will deepen the following topics: the compartmentalization of cells; the sorting and the transport of proteins in different cell compartments; the intracellular vesicular traffic; the maintenance of the compartmental diversity; endocytosis and exocytosis, extracellular vesicles; structures and mechanisms involved in protein and organelle degradation: autophagy; the cytoskeleton organization with special emphasis to cell behavior (cell adhesion and migration).
The laboratory activity will be mainly devoted to the preparation and maintenance of cell cultures and to the design of a scientific experiment by students.

Type of delivery of the course

The course takes place through classroom lectures and experimental activity in the cell culture laboratory. Lectures are given with the aid of power point presentations and videos. For laboratory activity, students are distributed into groups of 10-15 per turn. By using cutting edge tools such as the confocal microscope the student will be able to analyze the internal organization of the cells.

Attendance

Attendance at the course is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.

Type of evaluation

The oral exam consists of the discussion with the teacher on some of the topics of the program and is aimed to the evaluation of the following aspects: • knowledge levels of the topics, • Ability to link different topics of the program • Speaking ability and correct use of scientific language, • Ability to understand and discuss a scientific paper, • Ability to design an experiment and analyze the results.
