Outlines of the Church history in early modern age (XIV-XVIII century)
The course will provide a basic knowledge of the principal events and problems on the Church in the early modern history, also in connection with another religious confessions. A first part will illustrate the situation of the Church in the late Middle Ages, in particular in relation to the Avignon period and the Western schism; a second part will analyse the Protestant reform and the Catholic reform. A third part will treat the relations between the Church and States in the period of absolutism and enlightened despotism until the eve of the French Revolution.

Type of delivery of the course
Development method In order to introduce students to the critical approach to literature and sources, particular attention will be paid to the problematic nodes, to the discipline’s technical language, to the space-time placement of the treated topics, to the religious institutions’ meaning and role, to the interactions with the society and culture and to the main historiographic debates. A large space will be reserved for reading and commenting on documentary sources and for using maps, graphs, iconographic sources and other audiovisual media.Attendance
Frequency is not mandatory, but highly recommended because it allows students to deep more about the subject and benefit from the teacher's explanations.Type of evaluation
For the attending students a three-hour written test is required in itinere in which the students will have to answer three open questions. As final exam, an oral interview will follow which will focus also on the comment to the written test. For those not attending the final exam will be oral and will focus on three questions. For all, the exam is aimed at ascertaining the skills acquired, the ability to adequately understand the sources and the exam texts, to express correctly what has been learned and to communicate it with maturity of judgment.
