The course aims to provide the basic knowledge about the main historical and artistic phenomena of the early modern period (fifteenth and sixteenth centuries), particularly in Central Italy, investigated under the different aspects of the historical context, the historiography of the art history, and the stylistic analysis. At the end of the course, the student should be able to present clearly and competently the contents learned through the frontal lectures, the reading the bibliography, and the visits to the monuments. He should demonstrate to orient himself in understanding age, technique and subject of the works of art, through an independent judgment and a critical awareness.

Programme

The frescoes of the Sistine Chapel under Sixtus IV: the work of art, the artists, the workshops.

The course will consider the artists active in the Sistine Chapel under Sixtus IV, focusing on their careers and the role in the Vatican work.
