The student will acquire the essential knowledge of the discipline (origin and development of alphabetical writing in Greece, characteristics of local alphabets, typology of inscriptions and their supports, bibliography in the field, specialised computer tools, etc.). They will also learn the fundamental techniques and conventions for the filing and editing of epigraphic texts. Through the reading and exegesis of epigraphic texts they will approach some aspects of Greek civilisation (especially political, institutional, social) more directly.

Type of delivery of the course
Frontal lessons and practical training (one at the Museo Nazionale Romano). In case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, distance teaching, integrated, where possible, with face-to-face teaching will be applied.Attendance
Optative, but highly recommended.Type of evaluation
Oral. In order to be able to take the exam, at least seven days before the oral examination students must supply a written paper with the edition (lemma, transcription, translation and typological commentary, according to indications which will be offered in time) of an inscription selected by the teacher during the course. The exam consists of a debate on the paper supplied by the student and will test the knowledge of the course contents (topics and inscriptions discussed in the classes, handbook). About the inscriptions discussed during the course, students are expected to be able to read, translate and analyse (grammatically and syntactically) them.
