Programme

Justice and the city: a reading of Plato, Republic I. After an introduction to the context and overall characteristic of Plato's Republic, the course will offer a full analysis of book I of this work.

Core Documentation

Any edition of Plato’s Republic will do, provided that it includes the Greek text. Suggested reading: M. Vegetti, Guida alla lettura della Repubblica di Platone (Laterza: Rome-Bari 1999).

Type of delivery of the course

The exam is oral. Students will answer a few questions on the subjects covered in the course.

The exam is oral. Students will answer a few questions on the subjects covered in the course. Students will read, translate and comment on one or two passages from Plato, Republic I; they will also answer one or two questions on the character of the work (narrative structure, characters, themes, interconnections with contemporary Athenian culture).
