Il corso è composto da due moduli. Mentre il primo modulo si concentra su alcune tra le principali strutture grammaticali e morfo-sintattiche della lingua inglese, il secondo modulo mette a fuoco la varietà della cultura americana attraverso le short stories e i loro autori. Una selezione di short stories americane scritte tra il diciannovesimo e il ventesimo secolo sarà letta e discussa in classe. Particolare attenzione sarà rivolta alle caratteristiche retoriche e formali dei racconti e al loro impatto e contributo alla storia e cultura americane.

Il corso è diviso in due moduli. Il primo modulo analizza alcune tra le principali strutture grammaticali e morfo-sintattiche della lingua inglese; il secondo si concentra sul contributo letterario e critico di alcuni scrittori e scrittrici afro-americani/e del ventesimo secolo. In un’ottica interdisciplinare, l’analisi delle caratteristiche formali di questi testi sarà fondamentale per la connessione di tematiche di natura letteraria ad altre questioni sociali e culturali. Promuovendo la partecipazione attiva in classe, il metodo di insegnamento adottato prevede il miglioramento delle abilità linguistiche e la capacità di interazione nelle discussioni.

Il secondo modulo è un’introduzione alla varietà della cultura americana attraverso le short stories e i loro autori. Alla fine del modulo, gli studenti saranno in grado di: analizzare lo sviluppo storico e cronologico delle short stories americane attraverso i loro autori più rappresentativi; acquisire familiarità con l’analisi e l’interpretazione critica delle short stories analizzate attraverso adeguati strumenti teorici e metodologici, riconoscendo interpretazioni alternative e sviluppando pensiero critico; sperimentare i modi in cui testi letterari e culturali possono trasformare la percezione e la comprensione di sé stessi, degli altri e delle comunità.

La preparazione sarà valutata attraverso una Prova scritta che si tiene al termine del corso. Si basa su una serie di quesiti a scelta multipla e a risposta aperta sugli argomenti trattati nei due moduli di insegnamento. Se si desidera migliorare il voto ottenuto alla Prova scritta, si potrà sostenere la Prova orale in inglese sul materiale trattato in classe.
