This international methodological framework represents the global standard for the accounting, monitoring and management of institutional emissions, ensuring transparency, comparability and data reliability.<\/p>\n<p>The GHG Protocol classifies emissions into three categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scope 1 \u2013 Direct emissions<\/strong>, generated from fuels used directly by the University (mainly for building heating and on-site electricity production).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scope 2 \u2013 Indirect emissions<\/strong> <strong>from purchased energy<\/strong>, linked to the production of electricity consumption but purchased from third parties.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scope 3 \u2013 Other indirect emissions<\/strong>, associated with activities connected to institutional operations (mobility, business travel, transport, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Current state of Roma Tre\u2019s emissions<\/h2>\n<p>In recent years, the University has developed tools and procedures that now allow <strong>for a solid and systematic estimation of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.<\/strong> Below are the figures for 2024:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Scope 1<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emissions related to natural gas heating of University buildings amount to <strong>515 tonnes of CO\u2082.<\/strong> This figure reflects an ongoing commitment to structural emission reduction: a significant portion of the building stock is already heated using <strong>heat pumps<\/strong>, reducing reliance on methane-fueled systems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Scope 2<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roma Tre purchases <strong>100% renewable certified electricity<\/strong>. Under the GHG Protocol\u2019s market-based approach, this leads <strong>to zero Scope 2<\/strong> emissions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Scope 3 (development phase)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An initial monitoring of certain categories of indirect emissions has started with a preliminary estimate of approximately <strong>747<\/strong> <strong>tonnes of CO\u2082 for 2025<\/strong>, primarily linked to business travel and institutional transport.<br \/>\nThe University is currently working on more comprehensive methodological and organizational tools: <strong>by 2026<\/strong>, the goal is to implement a stable and reliable system for estimating Scope 3 emissions, particularly those related to business trips and commuting by staff and students.<\/p>\n<h2>Governance, objectives and future prospects<\/h2>\n<p>To coordinate this process, an interdisciplinary working group has been established with the task of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consolidating <strong>an official and systematic University emissions inventory<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>developing reliable data-collection tools and indicators<\/li>\n<li>defining and monitoring <strong>mitigation strategies<\/strong> and reduction targets<\/li>\n<li>promoting organizational and infrastructural choices aligned with ecological transition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Short-term objectives (by 2026) include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>reducing Scope 1 emissions<\/strong> by further expanding heat-pump heating systems and implementing energy-efficiency measures<\/li>\n<li><strong>definitively consolidating Scope 2<\/strong> reductions by maintaining electricity supply \u00a0entirely from renewable sources<\/li>\n<li><strong>developing a structured monitoring system<\/strong> for Scope 3 emissions by 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This work represents a crucial step in enhancing Roma Tre\u2019s climate strategy.
