Department of Mathematics and Physics

The following information refers to the degree programs of the Department of Mathematics and Physics: Mathematics  (L-35)

Eligible to participate in the exam:

Those who already hold a high school diploma and students enrolled in the fourth and fifth year of high school. Anyway, enrolment can only be carried out after obtaining the diploma.

The Academic Regulation document outlines the organizational aspects of the degree program, including:

  • access procedures
  • criteria for the recognition of prior learning

The regulations are published on the department website: Link identifier #identifier__90561-7Regolamenti didattici - Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica (uniroma3.it)

A. Test Dates and Key Deadlines

The admission test for the assessment of the initial knowledge consists of a TOLC-S test

Below are the procedures to follow:

  • Register for the TOLC-S through the CISIA portal (Link identifier #identifier__72546-8CISIAONLINE)  within the deadlines set by CISIA and take the test. The test calendar is available at the following link: Link identifier #identifier__20524-9CISIA - Calendario prove TOLC-S;
  • Register at Roma Tre University: create an account for online services via the page Link identifier #identifier__158437-10Student personal account Student Area – Student Portal (uniroma3.it) (see Article 1 of this Admission Notice - Italian version) in order to proceed with enrolment (Article 4 Admission Notice).

It is possible to complete the "Registration at Roma Tre" and proceed with enrolment even before taking the TOLC-S test in accordance with the deadlines specified in Article 4 of the Admission Notice (Italian version).

Admission to degree programs of the Department of Mathematics and Physics is mandatory but non-selective, it is necessary to assess the students’ initial knowledge level, therefore it is recommended to take it before the beginning of the classes scheduled September 22 2025.

Those who do not take the initial preparation assessment test may still enroll within the deadlines indicated in this annex. Failure to take the test on the dates specified on the CISIA website will result in the automatic assignment of Additional Educational Obligations (OFA), which can be fulfilled according to the provisions of the academic regulations of each degree program, available on the website.

B. Exam Format, content, and Outcome

Format of the Exam

The TOLC-S test consists of a series of multiple-choice questions, divided into several thematic sections submitted in sequence. Each section must be completed within a predetermined time which varies for each section.
The test administered at national level consists of 50 questions to be completed within a total of 120 minutes, divided into the following areas:

  • Mathematics: 20 questions in 50 minutes
  • Logic and Problem solving: 15 questions in 30 minutes
  • Biology: 5 questions in 10 minutes
  • Chemistry: 5 questions in 10 minutes
  • Physics: 5 questions in 10 minutes
  • Earth Science: 5 questions in 10 minutes

For the TOLC-S (Science) only the answers related to “Basic Mathematics” questions will be evaluated

At the end of the TOLC-S, there is a section of 30 questions for the English Language Knowledge Test lasting 15 minutes, which does not count towards the final score but replaces the language placement test referred to in Article 9 of the Admission Notice (Italian version).

The required knowledge level corresponds to the official Italian curriculum of High School (Scientific High School). Further information and examples of tests taken in previous academic years can be found on the website Link identifier #identifier__140767-11www.cisiaonline.it

The tests take place in multiple sessions; the date and time will be indicated when booking the TOLC-S on the CISIA portal Link identifier #identifier__135544-12www.cisiaonline.it

Rome Tre University will host the TOLC-S test on some dates. The full test schedule is published at the link: Link identifier #identifier__15228-13Calendari delle prove TOLC (testcisia.it)

Exam Outcome

The test result, excluding the English Language section, is determined by assigning the following scores:

  • Correct answer: +1
  • Wrong answer: -0.25
  • No answer or cancelled answer: 0

Additional Learning Requirements (OFA)

Exam outcome does not affect enrolment but will lead to the assignment of OFA if the score is less than 6 out of 20.

The OFA can be fulfilled by passing an assessment to be taken during the course of study.

Alternatively, enrolled students may take the TOLC-CISIA or another method as provided for in Article 4 of the Course Regulations.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers, throughout the academic year starting as early as September, educational support provided by tutors and/or professors, aimed at giving students the tools for a rapid recovery (in terms of knowledge and skills) of basic mathematics concepts, thus facilitating their integration into the initial teaching activities.

For the L-30 PHYSICS degree program, OFAs (Additional Educational Obligations) can be fulfilled through one of the following methods:

  • Passing a remedial OFA test organized by the Department;
  • Retaking the TOLC-CISIA test;
  • Earning 12 CFU (University Educational Credits) by passing exams from the first-year courses.

For the L-35 MATHEMATICS degree program, OFAs can be fulfilled through one of the following methods:

  • Passing a remedial OFA test organized by the Department;
  • Retaking the TOLC-CISIA test.

Alternative Accepted Tests

Other Tests and TOLC

The following are also considered valid:

  • CISIA TOLC-I-B tests (also in the TOLC@CASA format); for this type of test, only the “Mathematics” and “Basic Mathematics” sections will be evaluated;
  • Tests taken in other degree programs at Roma Tre University or other universities, provided they covered the following topics: Numbers and Sets; Algebra; Geometry; Functions, Graphs, Relations; Logic and Language; Trigonometry; Equations and Systems; Combinatorics and Probability.

To determine whether Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) apply:

  • In case 1), the result will be considered insufficient if the score in the Mathematics section of the TOLC is below 6, as with the TOLC-S;
  • In case 2), the result will be evaluated by the relevant Academic Committee.

Applicants must register online as indicated in Article 1 – General Provisions of this Call for Applications, and enrollment must be completed according to the deadlines outlined in Article 4.

Orientation / University Life Day

Applicants who have participated in the University Life Day and passed the final test of the program are admitted to the degree courses without the requirement to take the placement test.

Interested candidates must register for the online services as indicated in Article 1 – General Provisions of this Call for Applications, and enrollment must be completed according to the deadlines outlined in Article 4
