RomaTre against plastic

Roma Tre has always been committed to making sustainability an integral part of the University’s policies. Projects and initiatives have been launched to encourage the active participation of the community in reducing environmental impact while ensuring the well-being of the community and economic development of the community. Particular attention is devoted to fostering responsibility in the education of students, whose future behaviors and decisions will be influenced by the knowledge acquired during their university experience.

A key aspect of the University’s projects is the fight against the consumption of single‑use plastics, for this purpose steel water bottles customized with the Roma Tre Logo have been purchased and distributed free of charge to enrolled students.

Let’s fight climate change together.

Results

Roma Tre believes that action is needed at the source of the process that leads, at the end of the production cycle, to the presence of plastic in the environment. Therefore, the University works to discourage the use of single‑use plastic bottles by providing students and staff, in addition to the stainless‑steel bottles already described, drinking water dispensers.

Across all University locations, there are 28 drinking water dispensers available for filling thermal bottles with room‑temperature, chilled or sparkling water.

In 2025, a total of 860.415  liters of water had been dispensed, resulting in a saving of approximately 1.720.830 plastic bottles, corresponding to 17.208,3  kg of plastic not released into the environment and a consequent reduction of about 46 tons of CO₂.

The average weight of a 0.5 L PET bottle is about 15 g = 0.015 kg. The emissions for producing 1 kg of PET are approximately 3 kg of CO₂.

Calculation:

  • Plastic saved: 1.720.830 bottles ×0,015 kg = 25.812,45kg of PET.
  • CO₂ emissions avoided: 25.812 kg × 3 kg CO₂/kg PET = 77.437 kg of CO₂, which corresponds to 77,4 tons of CO₂.
