Roma Tre Against the Mafias

12 classrooms dedicated to mafia victims to promote a culture of legality

Roma Tre University is honored to announce the initiative “Roma Tre Against the Mafias”, a project that reflects the founding values on which the University bases its activities: the fight against all forms of criminality, the commitment to social justice and the promotion—both inside and outside the University—of active citizenship skills, with the awareness that respect for the rule of law is essential for democratic life.

In this spirit, Roma Tre University has decided to name 12 university classrooms after innocent victims of the mafia. This gesture is not only a tribute but also a concrete commitment to remembering and honoring those who lost their lives because of heinous and ruthless criminal acts.

The importance of this initiative lies first and foremost in commemorating the victims and expressing deep and shared solidarity with their families. Moreover, fully in line with its institutional mission, Roma Tre aims not only to promote cultures of legality and solidarity but also to contribute to strengthening public memory concerning mafia crimes. The University intends to educate present and future generations to firmly oppose all forms of organized crime and to work together to build a fairer society.

The mafias represent a threat to democracy and civil coexistence. Fighting them is a moral and civic duty that Roma Tre University embraces by standing alongside those who combat this phenomenon each day. With this spirit, Roma Tre gives its patronage to the “XXIX Day of Remembrance and Commitment in Memory of Innocent Victims of the Mafias”, organized in Rome on March 21, 2024, by Libera.
Roma Tre Against the Mafias is a project that transcends the boundaries of the University and its academic community: it is an invitation to everyone to join the fight against mafia organizations and contribute to creating a better future. Together we can truly make a difference,  Roma Tre intends to contribute starting from its own classrooms. The project was launched on March 18 at 3:00 PM with an event held in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate Building (Via Ostiense, 133).

The event opened with institutional greetings from the Rector, Prof. Massimiliano Fiorucci and the General Director, Arch. Alberto Attanasio.
Following the introduction by Prof. Anna Lisa Tota, Deputy Rector, the speakers included:

  • Don Luigi Ciotti, President of Libera. Associazioni, nomi e numeri contro le mafie
  • Vincenza Rando, Senator of the Italian Republic and member of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission
  • Nando Dalla Chiesa, President of the Italian Scientific Society for Mafia and Anti-Mafia Studies (SISMA) and Honorary President of Libera
  • Paolo Borrometi, Deputy Director of the ItalianPress Agency (AGI)
  • Vittoria Podo, Roma Tre student

The meeting was moderated by Prof. Marco Catarci, Pro-Rector for Third Mission Activities.
