Established in 1992, it has rapidly grown both in terms of student numbers and in the range of academic programmes offered. It currently has 13 departments offering Bachelor's and Master's degrees, postgraduate diplomas, advanced training courses, PhD programmes, and schools of specialisation.

The FIS 3 Call, whose results were recently announced by the Ministry, allocates €475 million to fund research projects of high scientific value, carried out by emerging researchers (Starting Grants), mid-career researchers (Consolidator Grants) and established researchers (Advanced Grants). Its main purpose is to promote the development of fundamental research according to well-established practices at European level, following the model of the European Research Council (ERC). Out of 86 project proposals submitted, Roma Tre University has been awarded more than € 8.7 million for 6 funded projects, with an additional project deemed eligible that may be activated in the event of a further funding allocation through the ranking lists. In the PE (Physical Sciences and Engineering) sector, funding was awarded to Valerio Acocella (Earth System Science – Advanced Grant), Filiberto Bilotti (Systems and Communication Engineering – Advanced Grant), Giorgio Cipolloni (Mathematics – Starting Grant), Cristoforo Demartino (Products and Processes Engineering – Consolidator Grant) and Alfredo Sciortino (Condensed Matter Physics – Starting Grant). In the SH (Social Sciences and Humanities) sector, Angelapia Massaro (The Human Mind and Its Complexity – Starting Grant) was admitted for funding.
