Il corso fornirà un'introduzione al movimento Law and Humanities in generale, per poi concentrarsi su diversi ambiti di studio, seppur strettamente connessi tra loro: ad esempio diritto e letteratura, diritto e filosofia, diritto e architettura, diritto e iconografia, diritto e archeologia, diritto e musica, etc. Il corso metterà in discussione il tradizionale isolamento degli studi giuridici, analizzando il diritto in riferimento alle altre scienze sociali e, più in generale, a un contesto culturale più ampio. Testi, simboli e rappresentazioni, che hanno fortemente influenzato la comprensione comune del diritto, saranno discussi dalla titolare del corso in dialogo costante con docenti provenienti da diverse parti del mondo, ospiti del corso.
Obiettivi formativi del corso:
• introdurre gli studenti al movimento Law and Humanities;
• indagare i benefici degli studi interdisciplinari;
• sviluppare un approccio critico ai testi giuridici;
• comprendere il diritto nel più ampio contesto delle scienze sociali;
• sottolineare l'importanza del contesto culturale per una migliore comprensione del diritto, tanto nel passato quanto nel presente.

LAW AND HUMANITIES 2026/'27


COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course will first provide an introduction to the law and the humanities movement in general and then focus on several different, even if strictly connected, fields of study: e.g. law and literature, law and music, law and fiction, law and truth etc. The course will question the traditional isolation of legal studies in analyzing Law with reference to the other Social Sciences and, more generally, to a larger cultural context. Texts, symbols and representations, which have greatly influenced popular understanding of law, will be discussed in thematic weeks by professors coming from different parts of the world.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- to introduce students to the law and the humanities movement.
- to investigate the benefits of interdisciplinary studies.
- to develop a critical approach to legal texts.
- to understand law in the wider context of social sciences
- to stress the importance of the cultural context for a better understanding of law in the past as well as the present

ASSESSMENT TOOLS:
Final grades will be based on:
• Participation in class
• Midterm written work
• Final, oral exam

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance in class is compulsory to be admitted to the final examination, which will cover all the topics discussed during the course.

READING MATERIAL:
Every thematic week will be associated to introductory papers which will be progressively uploaded on the ‘Roma Tre’ e-learning platform.

Lessons will start on Monday 5 October 2026 at 2.00 p.m. in Classroom 278, II Floor. The course will be held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2.00 p.m. to 3.45 p.m. and will end on Wednesday 9/12/2025.
