The course will focus on the political history of energy and on the environmental consequences of the emergence of different energy regimes from the beginning of the 20th Century to the present time.

Programma

Esploreremo le origini dell'avvento dei combustibili di origine fossile con l'emergere dell'era del carbone, passando per l'era degli idrocarburi, fino alle più recenti tendenze verso le energie da fonte rinnovabile. Questo sarà fatto analizzando le strategie delle grandi potenze, i dibattiti politici e intellettuali sulle fonti energetiche, l'espansione del fordismo e del consumismo, il ruolo delle multinazionali del petrolio, le pressioni derivanti dalla decolonizzazione e dall'emergere del dibattito ambientalista dagli anni Settanta, fino al più recente dibattito sul l'"Antropocene" e la "decarbonizzazione".

Concetti come "maledizione delle risorse", "estrattivismo", "resource curse", "limiti della crescita", "picco del petrolio", "sviluppo sostenibile", saranno discussi e inquadrati nella letteratura accademica (ed eventualmente materiale d'archivio), aggiornati con immagini e documentari.

Il corso è impartito in lingua inglese.
