The course aims to realize a project of a building with functional and structural characteristics of medium complexity, in its aesthetic dimension and relationships with the context. Insights on aspects of its environmental and energy compatibility and initial system plant construction. In-depth analysis from a structural point of view in collaboration with the parallel 1M Structural Design Laboratory.

Elaboration of the architectural design: graphics on the urban scale (1: 1000/1: 500) and the architectural scale (1: 100 / 1:50) in addition to the creation of a contextualized model at scale 1: 200 with insights 1 : 50.
The work can be done individually or in groups of maximum 2-3 students.

The course develops a cognitive experience through the integration between theoretical contributions and laboratory activity (practical-application). The module requires midterm audit closely related to design seminars activity. The main test coincides with the final exam, in which students present their project, complete with all its parts, according to the indications provided by the Laboratory teachers, and argue about the main issues of theorethical communications. The project area lies between Via dei Sabelli, Via dei Latini, and Via degli Aurunci. This portion of a block collapsed following the bombing of July 1943, currently housing several ground-floor buildings that, for the purposes of the design exercise, may be demolished.
The workshop's objective, starting with the foundational nature of the urban dimension of the theme, is to develop a building design. Some aspects of the building's construction will be explored in depth, in continuity with the 2M Workshop in the first semester of the following year. However, the theme of construction will inform the project from its earliest conceptual inspirations, in the spirit of "executable design" advocated by Gio Ponti.

Students will work in small groups (3 people max.); they will have available dwg with maps and profiles of the area and an explanatory dossier. Each seminar comprises lectures, group work, desk critics, guest professors’ lectures, on site visits to projects relevant to the topic of the design studio. At the end of each seminar student groups will be asked to submit panels describing the state of progress of their work which will be evaluated. The professor’s evaluation of each project will be discussed with all students during a collective seminar.Attendance

Assessment consists of a presentation of the project and the final work. Students are required to produce illustrative tables describing the project's progress and the results of their work.
