The module starts from the confrontation between Voltaire and Rousseau following the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, from the relationship between nature and science in modernity. The second part of the module, drawing on the reflections of Isabelle Stengers, considers this relationship in the light of contemporary conceptions and perceptions of catastrophe.
