21001997 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2

To provide the tools for the preparation of a medium-sized project and of medium complexity and with particular regard to the size and configuration of the space, from the volumetric definement of the entire complex, to the relations with the context and the definition of the structural relationship in the typological and spatial choices.

Programme

Students (individual or in groups of two) will be involved in the project of a small public building - a museum - in the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio. The museum architecture, beyond its specialized aspects, appears particularly well qualified to experience the first approach to a complex building, for its aesthetic and functional constraints, for the presence of different uses, and for his close relationship with public space. From this point of view, locating in the former slaughterhouse is focusing on familiarity that students have with the place, in order to implement the project with the experience already acquired in terms of measures and use of space, as well as relationships with the urban context.
We will alternate lectures, focus upon individual design aspects, laboratory work, exercises on specific issues, with the aim to advance the student's architectural skills and the representation / presentation of their ideas. There will be periodic connections and shared experiences with the two parallel courses.

Type of delivery of the course

The Design Studio will be conducted using a combination of one-to-many lessons with Seminars where student projects are examinated. These Seminars can be individual but will also be conducted in a collective and shared manner, in order to build a global awareness of the design topics that are investigated within the Laboratory. Sessions of lectures will also be organized as shared topics with the parallel studios of the same year and semester. Again, with the intent of building a global and shared "critical mass of thought" around design for the 2nd year students.

Type of evaluation

The Studio evaluation will be based on the design presented at the final exam. The final judgment, though, will also take into account the evolution process of the design, and the awareness gained by the students on the learning objectives of the Studio, despite of the technical result obtained by the project completed at the end of the Studio.

Programme

The Design Workshop of the Second year of the degree course in Science of Architecture has as objective the design of a medium-sized building and complexity. With it aims to provide an architecture student experience of accomplished design, depth and aware of the surroundings urban and technological complexity, structural and environmental related to a project of this level. Think a significant space, both in relation all'internità architectural organism, both in relation to the part of the city. For the student this experience wants to represent disciplinary knowledge related to the tradition of architectural design, but also practical skills, manuals, which may extend to the planning of a board of architecture, a panel presentation, sketches collected in the album, a small plastic.
The theme of the year is the design of a Library at the service of the Department's activities. It will contain spaces for reading, book storage, student services and spaces for teaching and meetings. The library will be a place of relationship between the Department and the city.-One Of collective use space and relationship, establishing contextual relations between the elements of design and constitutes a small central or a "city gate" to the neighborhood level.

Type of delivery of the course

The performance of the laboratory includes: A) A cycle of lectures on the urban context, on the theme of the Library and on the reference design case studies. B) Application exercises related to the lessons, drafting of study models and analysis of case studies C) Design Seminars, which will directly address the design issues. In the final phase of the Laboratory an intensive training will take place on the final project, aimed at concluding the work in view of the final exam. following the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, student support and tutoring activities are carried out remotely, via the MS Teams platform, on the "Architectural Design Laboratory 2C" channel, code h0lpgxo https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3a6cc30a6d918340afb34be41831bd3dec%40thread.tacv2/conversations?groupId=2f59adef-1d7f-4ca6-87b9-c1b33b263d27&tenantId=ffb4df68-f464-458c-a546-00fb3af66f6a

Type of evaluation

The evaluation will take into account the frequency, the results of the exercises and the quality and completeness of the design test. in particular, the following will be evaluated: 1. the result of the Exercises: a) Study of exemplary libraries of modernity b) Individual study of the reading station in relation to natural light. The final architectural project will be carried out on the main scale of 1: 200 and 1,100 as regards Prospects, Sections, Plants and insertion in the urban area. The architectural detail project will be conducted at 1:50 scale. Models and three-dimensional views will be conducted at the appropriate scale. Delivery of exam papers in the agreed format no later than four days from the exam date 2. On the exam day, students and teachers meet in the virtual room dedicated to the course. 3. The students illustrate via screen sharing a document * Pdf illustrating the project and its formal and technical characteristics, for a maximum time of 10 minutes. a short discussion with the teacher follows. 4. At the end of the presentations, the teacher, in a separate room, processes the assessments and communicates them to the candidates in the virtual collective room.
