Programme

The course (60 hours) aims at offering the students the possibility to study the vocabulary of the English language related to their studies. The vocabulary presented and analyzed will therefore belong to the world of business and business communication. The course will allow the students to revise many topics of English grammar and syntax and will permit them to eliminate common errors of written and spoken English.
The students will learn to describe charts and tables with statistical data on business topics. They will also learn to write formal and informal work emails, to write a cover letter and to structure a curriculum vitae in English.

Knowledge and competences acquired:

Through reading comprehensions, exercises and case studies the lessons will cover the following topics:
• Management Systems
• The Future of Management
• Marketing
• Decision-making
• Increasing productivity
• Financial issues
• Job satisfaction
• The impact of IT
• Cultural Factors
• Communication
• Motivation
• Ethics

During the course there will be classes dedicated to the following grammar topics:

• Present Simple and Present Continuous
• Past Simple and Past Continuous
• Present Perfect Simple and Continuous
• Past Perfect
• The Future
• Modal Verbs
• If clauses
• Passive voice
• Reported Speech
• The definite article "The"
• Relative clauses
• Linking words and phrases

• A module will be about email writing, presentation letters (cover letters) and the layout of a curriculum vitae (resume).

1. All course material is available on the webpage “Business English B2” , University of Roma3. The password necessary to access the course material will be provided in class. Non-attending students can request the password writing to fabiogiuseppe.matassa@uniroma3.it.





Type of delivery of the course

Methodological approach: The course will be upper-intermediate (B2) and will be delivered entirely in English. Each lesson will contain explanations and practical skill-learning activities in order to improve the knowledge of the English language and prepare the final exam. Until it will not be possible to have class-room lessons, we will use the platform Moodle and there will be videoconference lessons on WEBEX. From September 2020 the exams will be in presence with a written and oral test to be held the same day.

Attendance

The students are invited to attend lessons with regularity. The students who have attended regularly will be able to take the written test at the end of the course and will then sit the oral in the exam sessions programmed for the academic year 2019/2020. The students who cannot attend and need clarifications about the course program and how to prepare for the exam, can arrange to meet me by fixing an appointment via email.

Type of evaluation

Exam modalities: The exam consists of a written and an oral test. The written test (120 minutes long) will be made up of a reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises and a descriptive essay of a graph or table of at least 150 words. The use of dictionaries will not be allowed. For the students who have attended the course the oral test will consist in the discussion of two articles/case studies among those read and analyzed in class. For the students who have not attended class the oral test will be based on the discussion of three articles/case studies chosen among the ones available on the course online page.
