One of the main aims of this Course of Study is the acquisition of competences in two foreign languages, which is based on the development of the four active and passive written-oral skills, to analyse the study of intercultural and transcultural phenomena through the tools and methodologies of linguistic and philological analysis, as well as the theory and practice of translation.
English Language and Translation III is amongst the distinguishing activities of the "Language and translation" area. The aim of the module is to provide students with level C1 (based on the CEFR) and to enhance their language strategies. It also aims at developing their ability to move in the linguistic context, both at a diachronic and a diatopic level, and to consolidate their metatextual consideration skills.
Students will be able to put into practice the acquired linguistic and communicative skills (active, passive and mixed); delve deeper in translation problems related to different textual genres, also in a transmedia perspective; interpret reality in a multilingual and multicultural perspective thanks to a strengthened intercultural competence; they will also possess consolidated communicative and argumentative skills.

Programme

The module is intended to provide an introduction to the main theoretical issues in translation studies and to the practical aspects of translation.
Translation theory: introduction to text analysis and theoretical approaches to translation. Text structure and adaptation: linguistic adaptation and cultural adaptation. Contrastive analysis (English/Italian). Overview of main translation strategies.
Translation practice (English to Italian): application of translation strategies and techniques; training in written translation; training in sight translation (first level, oral communication).

Type of delivery of the course

Classroom activities include: presentation and discussion of theoretical issues; power point presentations; dictation; sight translation; training in written translation.

Type of evaluation

Assessment Language test (C1) passed as a prerequisite. Information about our language training modules and assessments at http://host.uniroma3.it/linguisti/lcs-ingles/Roma3/Welcome.html 6 credits will be credited on successful completion of the following examination tests: Written exam: - English-Italian translation (about 150 words, English-Italian dictionary and other dictionaries allowed); - Theory: open ended questions on programme topics. The written exam will be complemented by the oral translation of a written text (sight translation). Please consult website for further details. Exchange and Erasmus students When taking the English-Italian Translation exam exchange/Erasmus students are allowed to use the following dictionaries: English-mother tongue; English-Italian; mother tongue-Italian.

Programme


The aim of the course is providing students with the theoretical tools required for a proper interpretation of the postcolonial text and the translation skills necessary to face the translation of postcolonial literature. Special light will be shed on the notion of English varieties (englishes) used by postcolonial authors.

The first part of the course will take into account the issues of Postcolonialism and Postcolonial Translation theory while the second part will be focused on the use of English varieties in postcolonial literature.

Theory will always be followed by practice through the analysis of past translations of postcolonial novels. In the final part of the course students will be engaged in the translation of postcolonial texts.

Type of delivery of the course

In order to achieve the expected aims, the teacher's exposition of the main topics will be followed by translation exercises.

Type of evaluation

The exam consists of a written test of 2 hours. Students are required to translate a passage from English into Italian (first part) and then answer a question related to the contents of both the course and the course's text. The exam is aimed at evaluating both the translation skills and the knowledge gained through the course.
