Course objectives
This course will help perfect and consolidate your theoretical knowledge and further develop your practical competence, acquired during the bachelor level and the first year of Magistrale. You will acquire a more advanced knowledge of translation and critical analysis of English language texts, enabling you to render an equivalent level of writing and argumentation from these texts. You will be required to develop and reinforce your own judgement by paying particular attention to transcultural dynamics.

Programme

Aimed at promoting dialogue and interaction while enhancing analytical and translation skills, the second year course is founded on the theoretical and practical notions acquired in the 2018-19 1st year English Language and Translation LM course, i.e.: evolution of Translation Studies as a discipline, theories of translation, key issues in translation practice, critical analysis of English-language literary texts; translation practice.
Within this framework, the course aims to further develop conceptual and practical skills, combining text analysis and translation and specifically focusing on the following issues: methodological approaches to drama analysis; evaluation of text-production and text-reception conditions, both in a synchronic and diachronic perspective; linguistic and cultural problems related to text adaptation and appropriation; dramatic and theatrical translation.



Core Documentation

Students will be provided with case studies and readings for discussions. All materials produced during class and additional readings will be made available via the Moodle Platform (protected area dedicated to the course) at the end of each session.

Type of delivery of the course

The course exploits the advantages of blended teaching, mixing both online and face-to-face components. 36 hours of face-to-face teaching and class activities are enhanced by the opportunities offered by the Moodle platform, i.e.: students’ active participation in the discussion forums (via Moodle); assignment administration and texts and task submission (via Moodle); upload and download of teaching material.

Type of evaluation

For regularly attending students, the final grade will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria, which qualify regular attendance: analysis of selected texts and evaluation of student's portfolio of compositions on set themes and tests (via Moodle platform); active participation in group discussion (forum via Moodle); end of course test. Non-attending students (i.e. students who do not combine the above requirements) should notify their condition as soon as possible by contacting the course tutor (paola.faini@uniroma3.it). Specific arrangements will be made to enable them to take the exam.
