21801922 - HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Through advanced didactics such as seminars, class discussions and presentations of individual research project, this course aims to provide students with the analytical tools necessary for a critical understanding of the evolution of the international system since the late Eighties, especially through of the evolution of the concept of international security. Therefore, particular attention will be given to conflict management and international crises, as well as to the emergence of new forms of threat and finally, the difficulties encountered by national states and international and supranational organizations in forging widespread consensus around the instruments with which to intervene in time of crisis to preserve security and stability.

The course analyzes the history of International Relations from the mid 1980s till the Obama Administration.

The main topics of the course are:
- End of the Cold War
- German reunification
- Iraq-Kuwait 1990-1991 war and the international reaction
- collapse of Jugoslavia
- the crisi in Somalia
- Rwanda genocide
-the crisis in Kosovo
- 9/11 attacks and War on Terror

The focus of the course will be on the kind of itnernational reactions in each crisis, the behavior of the main players of the international system (national states, organizations and alliances) and on the evolution of the threats to the security during the period analyzed (mid 1980s; 1990s, and the first decade of the XXI century).

Type of delivery of the course

The course is shaped for students who regularly attend the classes. During the first weeks, the professor teaches in a "traditional" way, explaining the most important developments of the international system from mid 1980s till the age of Bush jr and the first years of Obama Administration. The are some scheduled collective discussions about the historiography of important topics such as the reasons of the end of the Cold War, and others. The students are actively involved during the classes, through readings assigned by the professor. The second part of the course (last weeks) is devoted to the group presentations. These works are organized and discussed previously with the professor. The students will present their specific readings about one of the topics covered by the course, and after each presentation we'll have time for Q&A and discussion. Of course, is possible to prepare the exam without attending classes: see information for "studenti non-frequentanti" in the section "testi/books". In this case, students will study the books for non-attending students and will give the oral exam.

Students have to regularly attend the classes, if they want to prepare the exam as attending-students (Frequentanti).

Type of evaluation

IMPORTANT: for the summer session (June and July 2020) the oral exams will be held only ONLINE (through Microsoft TEAMS) Students will receive all the necessary information some days before the date they choose for their exam. ---------------- Students who don't attend classes (NON FREQUENTANTI) have to prepare for the program in the traditional way, and they will take the oral exam in one of the available sessions. Students attending classes (FREQUENTANTI) will be graded on: - active participation during the course (attendance + participation during the discussions + presentation about one reading assigned by the professor) 20% - oral presentation of a specific book, in the framework of a team-working experience (40%) - writing a collective short report about the topic of the group, based on the books assigned to each student by the professor (10%) + oral exam based on the compulsory textbooks for everybody (Varsori; Mammarella; + the 2 readings available at the Cartoleria "4 Appunti", via Chiabrera
