Preliminary knowledge of Greek language is not required. Original texts will be read in translation.
It is important that students attend as many classes as possible.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims at providing a global reading and analysis of Sophocles’ tragedies on Oedipus’ myth (Oedipus’ Tyrannus and Oedipus at Colonus). Other ancient sources and modern bibiliography will be examined in order to provide a wide perspective on this myth and its influence on ancient and modern thought.
BIBLIOGRAPHY
It is advised to read modern editions of Sophocles’ Oedipus tyrannus and Oedipus at Colonus including the text in its original language and a current translation.
In addition to this, students should read the following texts:
G. Guidorizzi, Edipo. Il gioco del destino (Grandi miti greci), Milano 2018;
J.-P. Vernant - P. Vidal Naquet, Mito e tragedia nell’Antica Grecia, Einaudi, Torino 1976.
