The aim of the course is to provide students with the most appropriate analysis tools to read the tradition of the nineteenth-century novel in its most significant models. To this end, students will have to study the terms of the theoretical critical debate on the characters of the historical novel and of the training novel, and reach a capacity for reading and analyzing texts, from a historical-cultural, stylistic and narratological perspective.

Programme

Course title: The testimonial narrative between truth and invention. "The Confessions of an Italian": historical novel and training novel
The course aims to investigate what happens in Italy after the Manzoni experience and the solutions adopted to respond to the crisis of the
models. In particular, through the analysis of the “Confessions”, we intend to propose a reflection on the characters of the historical novel
and of the training novel, both originally present in this text, the modern forefather of testimonial narration.

The course includes, in addition to lectures, an exercise space that will involve students with the preparation of term papers and oral presentation.

Attendance is recommended but not mandatory.

Type of evaluation

the overall evaluation includes a first test (in itinere) consisting in the preparation of a term paper and its exposition, and a second oral test in which the achievement of the expected objectives will be verified: in-depth level of knowledge with respect to the historical-critical issues addressed and capacity to use the vocabulary and critical tools learned.
