21001997 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2

To provide the tools for the preparation of a medium-sized project and of medium complexity and with particular regard to the size and configuration of the space, from the volumetric definement of the entire complex, to the relations with the context and the definition of the structural relationship in the typological and spatial choices.

Programme

Students (individual or in groups of two) will be involved in the project of a small public building - a museum - in the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio. The museum architecture, beyond its specialized aspects, appears particularly well qualified to experience the first approach to a complex building, for its aesthetic and functional constraints, for the presence of different uses, and for his close relationship with public space. From this point of view, locating in the former slaughterhouse is focusing on familiarity that students have with the place, in order to implement the project with the experience already acquired in terms of measures and use of space, as well as relationships with the urban context.
We will alternate lectures, focus upon individual design aspects, laboratory work, exercises on specific issues, with the aim to advance the student's architectural skills and the representation / presentation of their ideas. There will be periodic connections and shared experiences with the two parallel courses (proff. Panizza and Beccu).

Type of delivery of the course

The workshop takes place alternating theoretical lessons and practical design work. The project can be developed alone or in a group of up to two students. The practical work in the classroom is continuously assisted by the professor in charge and by the holders of the didactic supports. Some general revisions are planned for a collective verification of the progress of the work.

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory. It is tracked taking note of the presence at the general reviews and of the various interviews that took place during the semester.

Programme

Design of a university museum that must be connected with other functions for study and leisure. This building will be a meeting place for students, professors and citizens, in accordance with the decisions determined during the lessons and the design revisions.
The students have to precise all the functional areas of the building and to define its principal structural details. Above all, they have to combine the library with the nearest layout of the urban structure.
The 2nd Studio deals with an intermediate scale project design. Students face some primary challenges about measures, dimensions and layout of inner spaces, volumes and forms of buildings; the relation to the built context; structural, typological and spatial choices

Reference Bibliography

Monographic texts on Le Corbusier, Wright, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe. Depending on the topic developed in class, the magazines, both Italian and foreign, are also indicated, where attention is mainly paid to the technical-technological, historical or formal aspect.

Type of delivery of the course

The time devoted to teaching is divided between frontal teaching and practical design exercises. During the first month, ex cathedra lessons and some visits to works of contemporary architecture are prevalent (in Rome and Urbino in two days). Proceeding with the progress of the project, the lessons mainly concern the examples of modern and contemporary architecture. The practical design exercises are accompanied by individual seminars and reviews. The students, individually or in groups of two, develop the project through the processing of scale technical charts and models in different materials.

Attendance

Attendance is required for at least 75% of the lessons

Type of evaluation

The elements of the assessment turn almost exclusively to the design experience conducted within the Laboratory. In the first phase, the students individually perform exercises attesting their ability to order the distribution system through the arrangement of simplified plants and axonometries. At the end of the design experience, their product is assessed through three main reference parameters: the ability to transmit, through the documents, the intentions of the design idea; the improvement of individual potential; the quality of the proposed solution. All examination tests are conducted through a discussion on the presented papers and the theoretical criteria set out in the introduction.

Programme

The purpose of the Design Lab 2 is to draw up a medium-sized and medium-complex project, providing for the following features:
a. space planning
b. focus on the relationships to the context
c. definition of the structural aspects according to typologies and spaces.
The complexity of buildings and plans will match the student's real planning aptitudes. The chosen areas and the yearly theme aim to become part of the transformation and renovation dynamics connected to the Roma Tre University’s locations.
The project aims to design small facilities and services improving the activities of the Department of Architecture, while being an autonomous part but connected to the existing pavilions and potentially oriented towards the neighbourhood. The intervention will concern the area of the former Pavilion 14, which might be partially or totally demolished and rebuilt. A conversion should nevertheless be clearly recognisable as such.

Type of delivery of the course

The yearly theme consists of a small architecture, namely a Museum-Laboratory serving both the Department and the city. It provides for a simple plan, including a Service Centre. As well, a Museum-Laboratory of Architecture, a service centre and a public area will be provided therein. The lab will consist of a cycle of lectures on urban context, museums and reference projects. The lectures include practical exercises and Planning Workshops, which will directly address the subject matter.

Attendance

Attendance at the course is mandatory for 75%

Type of evaluation

With regard to student evaluation, three main factors will be considered: 1. Attendance to lectures and practises. 2. Ability to deal with the subject matter and to fulfil the practical tasks. 3. Quality and accuracy of the architectural project.
