The aim is to teach that the survey has a fundamental role in the knowledge of any architectural monument. The survey helps to clarify the data emerging from research on historical, literary and epigraphic sources, indispensable for a comprehensive approach to the study of the monuments.

Programme

The course offers a methodological approach to deal with the restoration of buildings with historical and architectural or archaeological value. This will be done through individual and group exercises done on multi-layered buildings dating back to different historical periods (from Roman times up to the buildings of the Twentieth century).
Special attention will be placed on the preliminary investigation: historical and documentary research, with the aim to gain knowledge related to the materiality of the building and the factors of degradation. The course also regards different issues related to conservation, restoration, and the use of compatible materials and techniques: operations led by the architectural project, that does not rule out the contemporary architecture, understood as part of a historical process constantly evolving.

Type of delivery of the course

The course takes place through monographic lessons, focused on the study topics, class reviews and inspections carried out in the buildings subject to analysis and restoration projects. Three exercises are scheduled to take place during the semester.

Attendance

Both participation in ex cathedra lessons, and the presence during reviews and site inspections are essential and mandatory.

Type of evaluation

There are three deliveries, related to the three exercises carried out during the course. Intermediate reviews help define the final grade of the course. The final grade is given by the average of the three exercises.

Programme

The project of conservation requires diverse phases which are correlated to each other, such as: the metric and geometrical surveys made through photo maps, historical analyses, stratigraphies of materials, structures and the diagnosis of the conservation project. The course aims to give the student the basic tools to realise the entire project. This will be undertaken through theoretical classes and practical exercises. At the end of the course the student will be expected to be able to recognise the diverse materials needed both to define the correct architectural interventions and the most compatible ones. The course aims to sensitise the students to the maintenance and protection of the old materials of the buildings, limiting invasive changes until they become absolutely necessary. For that reason the lessons will go deeper into some of the essential concepts of the culture of restoration: authenticity, stratification, limits, compatibility and the wrong use of materials.

Type of evaluation

Those students that choose the first option of exam (the group project) need to have the topic approved by October, so that by February they can conclude the whole project of conservation. The reviews of the project will be part of the exam and so marked as such. Moreover, during the reviews the student will also be examined about the program discussed during the course since those are the cultural bases to understand the basic project of conservation. Those students that choose the exam based on the bibliography and the course will be individually examined. During November there will be the first written exam on the given bibliography, on the course and on the practical exercises of the project. Those who fail to pass this first part will not be allowed to complete the final exam. Attendance on the course is mandatory and failure to attend at least 90% of classes means that you will not be allowed to complete the final exam.

Programme

The course is set in continuity with the didactic experience matured in the preceding years that it has the purpose to teach to the students the fundamental elements of the architectural restauration of an element of Roman historical building in a context with strong historical-architectural stratification.
The case of study for this year exercise is the block included among via delle Botteghe Oscure, via Caetani, via dei Delfini, and via dei Polacchi, where today is the Museum of the Crypta Balbi.
A block whose complexity represents in exemplary way the historical stratification of the building fabric of the Rome historical center and offers the opportunity to decline the investigation under different points of view.
On the bases of the documentation provided by the teacher and of bibliographical and archival searches to be conducted under the teaching staff supervision, the students, organised in groups composed by a maximum of three people, are requested to pursue a cognitive and projectual process facing all the different disciplinary aspects.

The exam will be carried out evaluating the theoretical preparation reguarding the topics discussed during the lessons and the design of the case study, taking into account also the outcome of the ongoing evaluations.
