Programme

The second part of the course involves the development of a residential architecture project.
This architecure will be designed in a non-contextualised lot, whose characteristics will be defined by the teacher and will constitute the application of concepts and notions settled in the first part of the teaching.
In particular, the architecture to be designed is a residence on the lake for the artist and designer Bruno Munari.
The residence will have a total area of about 245 square meters and must rise on a slightly steep lot of dimensions of 20 x 40 meters.

Type of delivery of the course

In the event of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will be applied: To take the exam remotely, the student must send 7 days before the exam date the images of his project, including the images of the three-dimensional model (Jpeg or Pdf format) in suitable resolution, to allow the commission to examine the documents. These documents will be uploaded to your personal folder in the Google Drive space of the Design laboratory, indicating the initials of surname and name and the word "exam" with the date of the appeal (YY, month, day) in the title of the files. The examination will be held by video conference on the Cisco WebEx Meetings platform, used in the course of the semester for classes and revisions, and the candidate will present and discuss their project with the commission, answering questions that this will address him.

Type of evaluation

In the event of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will be applied: The evaluation will refer to the technical and aesthetic quality of the architectural project, and to the candidate's ability to exhibit and interact with the solicitations of the commission, both with regards to the project developed and on general topics relating to architecture.

Programme

In the second semester, the commitment is 100 hours and the design theme is addressed, relating to a residence for eight refugees for whom to design a residence that proposes a specific way of living for this small temporary community, the guests' stay is six months. The project area is an agricultural land in Ventotene, near the small town and some important historical and natural presences. The goal is to create a story and references around the project theme, so that the student can develop a specific proposal and the fruit of his suggestions rather than a neutral and impersonal solution. This is in the belief that learning is greater if accompanied by a personal and interpretative idea of work.

The course contents are proposed and verified through lectures, exercises, educational visits, individual and collective reviews. The final exam mark takes into account all the activities carried out by the student during the year, the quality of the final project is obviously crucial in assigning the mark itself. All processing of the work is done by hand, the use of the C.A.d.

The didactic path is traced according to a method of teaching architectural composition based on the following steps:

- Elaboration of an "architectural concept" by means of a model, inspired by a relative lesson in which the architectural concepts underlying illustrious works are shown and told, in the field of architecture and contemporary art.

- Proposition of a "way of living" through an image, an author's photograph or a work of art that clearly express this content.

- Elaboration of a "settlement principle" that is aware of typological choices related to the residential theme, in strong symbiosis with the context in which the project is elaborated, thus making clear choices in relation to the soil and other natural elements of the place.

- Proposal for a "generating section" on a scale of 1: 100 with which to investigate the type of space to be proposed in relation to the theme and the place, focusing in particular on the elements: light, soil, spatial thresholds.

- Proposal for a "regulatory plan" that regulates the program in a specific typology and in a clear compositional structure, focusing in particular on the elements: proportions, quality of accommodation, distribution, space organization modules.

- Conscious choice of a "construction system" in relation to the previous elaborations, with particular attention to the role of the structural system to be adopted: masonry or system of linear elements, and its relationship with non-load-bearing elements, such as infill and internal dividers. This passage also defines the materials with which the project is endowed and with which the language of architecture is defined.

Development of a "correct representation" of the project in orthogonal projections, consistent with the canonical graphic codes but also with the design choices adopted.

Type of delivery of the course

The laboratory takes place through lectures, thematic deliveries, individual and collective reviews. If possible, also through direct visits to specific architectures and interventions by teachers outside the laboratory. In addition to the instructor in charge, students of the subject and doctoral students also follow the students' work, directing it towards greater awareness and towards more didactic choices. "In the event of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will apply:… - use of the moodle platform - lessons and reviews on the Microsoft Teams platform - publication of all work phases on a dedicated facebook group

Type of evaluation

In the second semester the evaluation regards the work on the given project theme. This work is done with drawings and models that are displayed during the examination in the manner required by the teacher. In any case, the evaluation also partly takes into account the path taken by the student and the ways in which he attended the laboratory. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will apply: - the exam will take place online, with publication of the images of the material requested on the platform indicated by the teacher

Type of delivery of the course

The semester is dedicated to the development of design exercise, a single-family house of about 250 square meters. The moments of review of the project will be alternated with supplementary lessons functional to guide the design process. In case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student evaluation will be followed. In particular: The lessons and the reviews of the project work will take place on the platform Teams.

Attendance

Attendance at the course is mandatory for 75%

Type of evaluation

The final exam consists in the discussione of the single-family house project, through the presentation of a series of drawings (plan in scale 1:200, floorplans and sections 1: 100, sections 1:50, axonometric and perspective views) and a model 1:100. In case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student evaluation will be followed. In particular: A week before the exam session, the students will upload pictures and / or scans of the drawings and the model in a shared folder on One Drive. The day of the exam session the discussion of the project will take place remotely through the Teams platform.
