Programme

i. Introduction to basic aspects of the structural concept.
ii. A sketch of the fundamentals of Statics.
iii. Main features of the mechanical behaviour of the structural elements and their assemblage, and consequently of the global structural response.
iv. Some examples of both structural and architectural design choices, with a particular focus on common building materials.

Type of delivery of the course

The course is carried out through lectures and classroom reviews of students' work. The structural concepts will be presented in a not completely formalized way, but an explanation by means of examples of the behavior of simple structural elements or of existing architectures will be preferred. Actual examples and related teaching materials will be given. The behavior of simple elements will also be presented with classroom experiments. In case of an extension of the emergency from COVID-19 outbreak, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will apply: web classes and exams through the Microsoft Teams platform

Attendance

Compulsory attendance for at least 75% of the hours

Type of evaluation

Students are evaluated in the application of the structural concepts presented during the course. In particular they will have to recognize the structural taxonomies in examples of existing architectures (the same studied in the first part of the design laboratory). They will then apply these concepts to the project of a small house. In case of an extension of the emergency from COVID-19 outbreak, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will apply: web classes and exams through the Microsoft Teams platform

Programme

The subject of this course is to show in a simple and intuitive manner, without loosing the rigor of a university course, which are the goals of structural design within the framework of the design of civil realizations.
Design is a multifold activity. In the case of structural design the fundamental task is to transfer loads to the foundations. Loads can be due to gravity but also to other natural actions in many cases external ones. This is the case of seismic action, wind and others.
The course intends to clarify the difference between the real problem to be solved: build the structure, and the instruments with whom we tackle and solve the design procedure.
Structural design is intended essentially as the solution to two main aspects: safety and functionality of the construction. However these former should be attained while respecting many other conditions imposed to the structures due to social functional aesthetic economic and others which contribute to the sustainability evaluation of the realization.
With reference to existing constructions taken as examples, the structure and its behavior is discussed. The physical interpretation of the behavior from the mechanical point of view is illustrated with reference to simple models. Alternative solutions are therefore discussed. First simple indications are given concerning definitions of structural elements in which a structure can usually be decomposed to simplify their structural conception. The whole structure as well as beams columns shear walls and stairs are therefore dealt with as well as of the different construction materials..
Finally the concept of the scale is discussed to present the representativeness of scaled models.

Core Documentation

The reference text is being written. The class notes are sufficient, given that attendance at the course is compulsory.
The power point files of the lessons will be provided to the students.

Type of delivery of the course

teaching is carried out through classroom lessons and laboratory activities, through the elementary mechanical objects contained in the teaching laboratory http://architettura.uniroma3.it/didattica/obblighi-formativi-aggiuntivi/laboratorio-di-meccanica-delle-strutture/ XXI. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the educational activities will be implemented. In particular, if this teaching course were to be delivered remotely, totally or in mixed form, the "Teams" and "Zoom" platforms would be used.

Type of evaluation

How to carry out the exams in the traditional way (in presence): The exam consists of two tests: a) a discussion on structural design choices; b) an oral test on the theoretical contents of the course. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of taking examinations will be implemented. In particular, if this teaching course were to be delivered remotely, totally or in mixed form, the "Teams" and "Zoom" platforms would be used. In particular: a) for discussion on the project, direct via Teams or Zoom with screen sharing, if digital connection allows it. Where it is not possible, the project documents are sent two days before to the teacher, or is uploaded to the web 2.0 mechanical portal (http://design.rootiers.it/strutture/); b) the oral and individual test is carried out with Teams or Zoom platform.
