21001997 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2

To provide the tools for the preparation of a medium-sized project and of medium complexity and with particular regard to the size and configuration of the space, from the volumetric definement of the entire complex, to the relations with the context and the definition of the structural relationship in the typological and spatial choices.

Programme

Students (individual or in groups of two) will be involved in the project of a small building - spaces for students with exhibition, study and refreshment functions - in the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio. A small building of this type appears particularly well qualified to experience the first approach to a complex building, for its aesthetic and functional constraints, for the presence of different uses, and for his close relationship with public space. From this point of view, locating in the former slaughterhouse is focusing on familiarity that students have with the place, in order to implement the project with the experience already acquired in terms of measures and use of space, as well as relationships with the urban context.
We will alternate lectures, focus upon individual design aspects, laboratory work, exercises on specific issues, with the aim to advance the student's architectural skills and the representation / presentation of their ideas. There will be periodic connections and shared experiences with the two parallel courses.

Type of delivery of the course

The workshop takes place alternating theoretical lessons and practical design work. The project can be developed alone or in a group of up to two students. The practical work in the classroom is continuously assisted by the professor in charge and by the holders of the didactic supports. Some general revisions are planned for a collective verification of the progress of the work. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented.

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory. It is tracked taking note of the presence at the general reviews and of the various interviews that took place during the semester.

Type of evaluation

Evaluation of the project and its correspondence to the topics covered during the workshop. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. In this case, the exam will take place in the form of a remote oral interview on the Microsoft Teams platform. The requested graphic works must be sent in pdf format to the teacher three days before the exam date published on the official calendar.

Programme

The class proposes the Design of a building hosting integrated Laboratories for the Department of Architecture within the complex of the former slaughterhouse of Rome (Mattatoio), today transformed as urban Campus hosting aside the University public museums and cultural institutions targeted mostly at young people and open to the lively neighborhood of Testaccio. The building is proposed as replacement of the current Pavilion n.14, with the possibility to fully substitute it or alternatively to preserve and integrate some parts. In a second step, the design is enlarged to the open area that mediates between the complex and the city, proposing to the students to face the topics of the open space design and of the solution of a longstanding urban marginal area by fully exploiting its strong potential while preserving at the same time the privacy of the Campus.

Type of delivery of the course

The Design Studio is based on the alternance of Lectures and Design Revisions, both available also online. The Design Development is guided through phases. It starts with a compact program for laboratories to be hosted within the perimeter today occupied by Pavilion n.14, then introduces structural concepts and finalizes a first design as a pavilion. In the second phase the program is extended with accessory functions to the open area that faces the pavilion and mediates between the whole complex and the city. The whole process happens with continuous production of maquettes, that allow a constant verification of the architectural impact of every choice, from layout to structure, to proportional, volumetric and morphological relationship with the context.

Attendance

Attendance at the course is mandatory for 75%

Type of evaluation

The Studio evaluation will be based on the design presented at the final exam. The final judgment, though, will also take into account the evolution process of the design, and the awareness gained by the students on the learning objectives of the Studio, despite of the technical result obtained by the project completed at the end of the Studio. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented.

Programme

The Studio offers students the tools to tackle a medium-sized and complex project, paying particular attention to relations with the urban context and the public dimension of architecture. The theme consists in the design of a Testaccio Civic Center, which involves the combination of spaces intended for temporary exhibitions, a small museum in the neighborhood, reception and information spaces, rooms for conferences, shows and projections, a study center with a library for the Testaccio Urban Archive, offices and services.

Type of delivery of the course

The Studio takes place in the classroom, alternating moments of discussion of the project with functional lessons to guide the design process. The lessons will focus on reading the urban context and on issues related to the design of the spaces required by the Testaccio Civic Center program (museum, library, conference rooms, etc.), with particular attention to the setting of the structural system and the management of light.

Attendance

Attendance is compulsory for 75% of the lesson hours

Type of evaluation

The Studio evaluation will take into account the participation in the activities carried out in the classroom, the degree of autonomy in the management of the design process, the ability to react critically to the suggestions offered by the teachers, the quality and degree of development of the project, the quality of its presentation through drawings, models and interview.
