The urban planning component – in the first semester - will introduce students to the social, environmental and urban issues characterizing Italy since 1945 until today, explaining the mutations occurred in the settlements and infrastructural networks, in the administrative systems, in the matrixes and objectives of the urban planning tools, with particular reference to the seeking of sustainability. In the second semester, the urban planning component will deal with the European contemporary issues of the urban management, offering as a practical assignment a detailed reading and interpretation applied to an area of Rome.
Programme
The SEL course, lasting one year, will develop jointly three components - Settlement, Environment and Landscape - considering their inseparable complementarity for the management of the reality around us. It will be a unitary course, led by lecturers who will perform the different parts along a common path.The urban planning component – in the first semester - will introduce students to the social, environmental and urban issues characterizing Italy since 1945 until today, explaining the mutations occurred in the settlements and infrastructural networks, in the administrative systems, in the matrixes and objectives of the urban planning tools, with particular reference to the seeking of sustainability. The course will be developed in a series of lectures, supported by the distribution of teaching materials, including exercises of urban interpretation A brief series of introductory exercises on the use of GIS will be carried out.Attendance
Attendance at the Cours is mandatoryType of evaluation
The learning assessment takes place through the oral discussion during the examination of the study topics developed and the evaluation of the graphic works, as well as through a critical analysis of the didactic experience carried out teacher profile teaching materials
course learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the tools and operational practices within the theoretical and legislative framework of Italian and European urban planning, developed through lectures and guided readings.
The practical part is developed through analytical design exercises on basic topics, starting at the beginning of the course and aimed at developing methods and techniques for analysis, evaluation and design in a limited urban context (parts of cities), with a focus on morphology and the graphic and symbolic language of disciplinary expression.
The experiment is organised into phases of classroom seminars, with standardised procedures and unified content.
In summary, the phases are:
- presentation of the topic/problem and definition of the exercise objectives;
- reading of the context by systems ( pattern, open space and services, infrastructure) and levels (from the block to the neighbourhood);
- assessment of points of contradiction (functional, morphological and environmental) and spaces available and/or reclaimable for transformation;
- possible proposals for design interventions as a response to the contradictions identified.
The basic theoretical topics covered, in summary, concern:
- critical presentation of the discipline, through a basic glossary and historical and critical notes on the city and urban planning;
- interpretation of the morphologies of settlement transformation (morphological typologies and descriptive models);
- identification of transformation factors (localisation theory, rent theory, social and ecological theories, etc.);
- the plan (content, scale and effectiveness);
- content and evolution of technical regulatory instruments and means of expressing the plan.
The examination will focus on the critical analysis and discussion of the work carried out in class and certain related theoretical aspects.
