With the Course of ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ we intend to supply architecture students with a contribution in this direction, that is with the knowledge that Theory is a fundamental and autonomous part of the Architectural Discipline, through a set of specifically chosen Theories, individual reflections, books, manuals, constructed and paper projects. The Theory of Architecture is neither a “how to” guide nor a justification that follows the establishment of an architecture, but rather a stand-alone instance of architectural thought. The theory of architecture is therefore closely linked to the practice of architectural design and research.

The course considers the need for an inseparable relationship between architecture and theory; the establishment of a mutual need between architectural design, its concrete exercising, and the advancement of theoretical reflection; and the systemization of disciplinary knowledge that brings the iridescent variety of technological, spatial, material, and applicable innovation within a framework of critical awareness, disciplinary systemization and advancement of knowledge. The course will consist of three main stages: A. Theoretical Lessons on the 10 Topics B. Exemplary Readings. Writings about the History of Theory of architecture or short essays, of a few pages, provided as PDFs by the teacher. C. Thematic Insights in the classroom or in external locations. Lectures, seminars, readings of buildings. In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented. The course includes internal moments of verification, in-depth analysis and elaboration of research contributions (max. Two students) to be discussed during the exam For the exam session, in case of extension of COVID-19 emergency, the exams will take place remotely on the dedicated Teams platform "Theories of Architectural Research" and according to the following program: 1. sending the research paper to the teacher no later than five days before the scheduled exam date. 2. illustration of the research paper in presentation mode * Pdf for a maximum of 10 minutes. Brief discussion with the teachers 3. Evaluation in a separate room by the teaching staff and public communication of the vote.
