Programme

The laboratory teaching is structured by alternating theoretical contributions, in the form of lessons / lectures with preparatory exercises exercise the main project according to the following schedule:

Tutorial: Beauty is the splendor of truth
structural and spatial typological analysis of paradigmatic architecture of the twentieth century author which manifests the coherence between aesthetics of form, design principles and program. (The authors are: Labrouste, Schinkel, Berlage, Wagner, Perret, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Terragni, Libera, Torroja, Kahn, Dieste, Candela, Nervi, Morandi, Perugini-Fiorentino, Lewerentz, Zumthor, Vacchini, Campo Baeza, Conzett, Keretz.)
The exercise involves the processing to be carried out in groups (3/4 students) chose the building of charts and a scale model 1/100 or 1/50 of a significant part of this:

The exam project: For a structural rationalism:
The Cultural Center of the Alessandrino District
Elaboration of the architectural design: graphics on the urban scale (1: 1000/1: 500) and the architectural scale (1: 100 / 1:50) in addition to the creation of a contextualized model at scale 1: 200 with insights 1 : 50.
The work can be done individually or in groups of maximum 2-3 students.

Type of delivery of the course

The course develops a cognitive experience through the integration between theoretical contributions and laboratory activity (practical-application). In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented

Attendance

Attendance is required for at least 75% of the lessons

Type of evaluation

The module requires midterm audit closely related to design seminars activity. The main test coincides with the final exam, in which students present their project, complete with all its parts, according to the indications provided by the Laboratory teachers, and argue about the main issues of theorethical communications. In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented

Programme

The aim of the Design Studio is to develop a project of an office building in the Ostiense area of Rome.
The didactic is divided in four seminars:

1_volume and the public space (3 weeks)
2_structural system (4 weeks)
3_internal distribution (3 weeks)
4_building envelope (3 weeks)

In the last part of the Design Studio students will be asked to synthetize the results of the four seminars into their final work.

Type of delivery of the course

Students will work in small groups (3 people max.); they will have available dwg with maps and profiles of the area and an explanatory dossier. Each seminar comprises lectures, group work, desk critics, guest professors’ lectures, on site visits to projects relevant to the topic of the design studio. At the end of each seminar student groups will be asked to submit panels describing the state of progress of their work which will be evaluated. The professor’s evaluation of each project will be discussed with all students during a collective seminar.

Attendance

Attendance to the design studio is mandatory. To access the final exam students must have successfully submitted their work at the end of all four seminars.

Type of evaluation

The exam consists in the exposition of the project and in the presentation of the final panels. Students must produce panels (6-8) in which they describe the evolution of the project and the results of the final synthesis work. Students have available, as an example, a series of tables produced by students of past year (in a shared folder in Google Drive).
