Programme

The project developed in the design studio 2m is the natural continuation of what started in the design studio 1m. The prerequisite for registration is to have followed the previous design studio 1M in the same channel.
The topic is a medium complexity architectural project, on which the cross-checks of the four teaching modules converge: Architectural and Urban Composition, Architectural Technology, Technical Physics, Economic evaluation of the project. The main topics concern:
- Criteria for liveability of the space

- Relationships between shapes and materials
- Normative references on building construction
- Representation and communication of the construction project
- Plant engineering and environmental elements
- Advanced materials and construction procedures
- Details of alternative construction solutions
- Economic evaluation of the design procedures

Type of delivery of the course

The workshop takes place alternating theoretical lessons and practical design work. The project can be developed alone or in a group of up to three students. The practical work in the classroom is continuously assisted by the professors in charge of the various modules in the respective timetables and by the holders of the didactic supports. Some general revisions are planned for a collective verification of the progress of the work. In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented

Attendance

Students must attend at the least the 75% of lessons to be admitted to the final exam

Type of evaluation

The examination consists of a discussion about the submitted documents and the theoretical contents of the design studio. Required documents: - GENERAL PROJECT - Quoted and annotated plans of the building, on a 1: 100 scale - Sections and significant elevations on a 1: 100 scale - Plans, elevation and cross section, in 1:50 scale. -Construction details 1:20-1:5 - SYNTHETIC BUILDING REPRESENTATION in paneled A1 format In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented

Programme

The aim of the Design Studio is to develop the final design for an office building in the Ostiense area of Rome, which will be defined in its preliminary design during the Design Studio 1M (Fall semester).
The didactic is divided in three seminars which correspond to the different disciplines converging in the Design Studio:
1_redefinition and in-depth study of the project with specific evaluation of economic and financial aspects;
2- in-depth study of technological and construction solutions, in-depth study of design aspects related to plant design, energy assessment and development of bioclimatic solutions;
3- redefinition and in-depth study of the architectural and distributive aspects of the building;
In the last part of the Design Studio students will be asked to synthetize the results of the four seminars into their final work.

Type of delivery of the course

Students will work in small groups (3 people max.) on the final design starting from the project developed during the Design Studio 1M. Each seminar comprises lectures, group work, desk critics, guest professors’ lectures, on site visits to projects relevant to the topic of the design studio. At the end of each seminar student groups will be asked to submit panels describing the state of progress of their work which will be evaluated. The professor’s evaluation of each project will be discussed with all students during a collective seminar.

Attendance

Attendance to the design studio is mandatory. To access the final exam students must have successfully submitted their work at the end of all four seminars.

Type of evaluation

The final exam consists in the presentation of the project described through a set of final panels. All students are required to submit 6-8 panels describing the evolution of the project and the results of the final synthesis work. Positive evaluation will be given to the projects that will demonstrate adequate and integrated development of all the design aspects addressed during the semester.
