21010201 - DYNAMICS IN ARCHITECTURE

Provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to apply physics laws to architecture models. The student will be introduced to the scientific method and its language. Topics discussed during the course are: Mechanical and thermal equilibrium, Elasticity and thermal expansion. Thermodynamics and Fluid dynamics. Heat engines and refrigerators. Conservation laws. Harmonic motion. Longitudinal waves. Sound and hearing.

Mutuazione: 21010201 EFFETTI DINAMICI DELL'ARCHITETTURA in Scienze dell'architettura L-17 BRUNI FABIO, SALERNO GINEVRA

Programme

SYLLABUS
Basics of the harmonic motion of a simple oscillator.
Damped motion, forced motion, and resonance conditions.
Diffusion of longitudinal/transverse waves in a fluid and in a solid, and in particular wave propagation in soils.
Mechanical models of simple oscillators applied to structural problems
Study of frequencies and modes of proper oscillation in structures (modal analysis)
Dynamic effects of earthquake and wind on the morphological characteristics of buildings.

Core Documentation

- Elementi di dinamica delle strutture, Luca Facchini, Esculapio
- Dinamica delle strutture e ingegneria sismica. Principi e applicazioni, Iunio Iervolino, Hoepli
- Dinamica delle strutture, Carlo Gavarini, ESA
- Appunti di lezione

Type of delivery of the course

The course alternates between theoretical lessons and laboratory exercises with the creation of numerical models aimed at understanding the dynamic behavior of structures in architecture. The course is face-to-face and attendance is compulsory.

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory for 75% of the course

Type of evaluation

Given that the course is offered to students of both the three-year degree and the master's degrees in Architecture, the assessment will be differentiated according to the student's enrollment degree. In all cases, however, the student will be asked to write an essay on a topic of the course of his choice and the numerical models produced in the laboratory exercises will be discussed.
