Programme

The course is a study programme that brings together three different but complementary subjects: RESTORATION, URBAN PLANNING, and CULTURAL HERITAGE LAW.
These subjects are linked by a common theme: studying and understanding historic cities.
Observing and understanding the city means analysing its current state and examining its history in order to plan its future. It means recognising its layered meanings, becoming aware of the complexity that makes a multidisciplinary approach necessary. Consequently, it involves considering the importance of the relationships between disciplines and, above all, combining theoretical and practical research on the common project of enhancing the existing city.
The Restoration course will illustrate the formative, typological and constructive characters of the historic city, then move down to the scale of the building and its constructive qualities, so as to deepen knowledge of the technological and material elements of pre-modern construction.
A practical exercise will be carried out on an assigned topic which, proceeding through successive levels of analysis, will initially cover the entire historic centre of Rome and then move on to the neighborhood and street level. The Trastevere district, and more specifically the ancient Via della Lungaretta, will be taken as a case study.
Through the successive stages of the work, students will have the opportunity to test their ability to interpret and read the historical formation process (through the use of direct and indirect sources) and the resulting critical and philological analysis of a highly stratified context such as the historic centre of Rome, in order to acquire the methodology for proper restoration, transformation or renovation.
One final task will be to draw up a plan for restoring the colour of the façades of historic buildings along Via della Lungaretta.

Type of evaluation

Evaluation is carried out by mutual agreement between the three teachers of the course and on the basis of the assignments they have set during the semester. During the exam, the following aspects will be considered: the ability to argue the themes and research questions addressed; the coherence of the analyses and proposed projects in strict relation to the research themes investigated; the maturity and independence of critical and design thinking; and relational skills related to group work (e.g., active communication, conflict management, adaptability, and reliability).
