The course will address theoretical and practical-applicative aspects related to urban and regional studies: short- and long-term socioeconomic transformations at different geographical scales, the rising of socio-spatial inequalities, the territorial governance. The theoretical part will be divided into two parts: (1) introduction to some basic concepts such as: urban and regional economics, urban governance and urban planning, and (2) analysis of the quality of urban space and its determinants. The applicative part will aim at illustrating the use of statistical data and geographic information systems (GIS) in the analysis of the different components of social and physical urban structure in a selected study area.

The course will begin by introducing the basic concepts and discussing a number of issues relating to the relationship between cities and quality of life. Existing studies on quality of life at different territorial and administrative levels will also be examined, along with their respective theoretical approaches and indicator systems.
Next, with specific reference to the subject areas, we shall examine the indicators suitable for measuring levels of economic and social well-being and environmental quality.
Depending on the availability of data, a set of information that can be compared over time will be compiled.
The course will place an emphasis on practical application. Students will acquire a basic understanding of database construction and management, as well as spatial analysis and statistics. Introductory GIS lessons will be provided to prepare students for processing and presenting the results of the practical exercise.
Databases and additional materials will be made available to students during the course.

Programme
The course focuses on analysing the measures that define quality of life in an urban context. Quality indicators will be analysed in detail, taking into account the complex interrelationships between the various well-being dimensions (economic, social, environmental). The case study will involve the analysis of a number of urban areas within the Municipality of Rome characterised by conditions of social and economic marginalisation. The challenges will be analysed, and the needs and potential resources required to address them will be identified. The course will begin by introducing the basic concepts and discussing a number of issues relating to the relationship between cities and quality of life.
