21201481 - ECONOMIC POLICY

The objective of the course is the understanding of the main economic policies and institutions and the analysis of their roles, functions and regulations. The course helps to build a good economic knowledge on fiscal and monetary policies in closed and open economies, redistributive policy, and structural reforms, with a focus on current economic and political topics (i.e. the current debate on the Eurozone).

The course will concentrate on selected important economic policy issues and relevant economic tools. The specific topics will be of contemporary interest, and will be announced by the start of each year. In any year the topics covered are likely to include some of the following: Globalisation: effects on welfare, development and income distribution; ii Inequality; Global imbalances ; Tax, fiscal policy and unemployment; Monetary policy and exchange rate frameworks ; Financial integration and currency unions ; Financial crises and relevant policies ; endogenous growth, exhaustible resources and relevant policies.

The course includes 3 lectures per week and it lasts 10 weeks. Lectures are dedicated to reinforce the applied aspects of the economic policy included in the program, and to assist the exam’s preparation. The course will provide seminars of experts involved in the implementation of the policies covered by the program.

WARNING: FOR THE SUMMER SESSION 2019/2020, EXAMS WILL BE BASED ON AN ORAL EXAMINATION ON TEAMS. FOR STUDENTS WHO WILL HAVE ACCEPTED THE ‘TESINA’ SCORE, THE ORAL EXAMINATION WILL COVER ONLY MODULE 1. THE WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE TWO EVALUATION WILL CONSTITUTE THE FINAL SCORE OF THE EXAM. ****************************************************** Non-attending students: Written test of 90 minutes Attending students: For students who regularly attend the course, the assessment is based on two written tests: Module 1: written exam consisting of short-answer questions and exercises that will follow those previously carried out during the meetings with the Tutor. Exam date: April 15, 2020 Form 2: dissertation of max 2 pages to be delivered by May 29, 2020. The details on the dissertation requested will be illustrated at the beginning of the course. The paper can also be completed with the support of the Tutor during the dedicated meetings. Each test (exam and thesis) will be evaluated with a score from 0 to 30. The weighted average of the two scores (2/3 for Module 1; 1/3 for Module 2) will correspond to the final grade of the course, and can be registered from June 2020 and until the winter session of January-February 2021. The final mark can be calculated only if both tests are sufficient (score> = 18/30). If one of the two modules is not sufficient, the mark of the sufficient module can be kept. The insufficient module must be assessed through the written exam, and the final grade of the course will be the (weighted) average of the two marks.

THE WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE TWO EVALUATION WILL CONSTITUTE THE FINAL SCORE OF THE EXAM. ****************************************************** Non-attending students: Written test of 90 minutes Attending students: For students who regularly attend the course, the assessment is based on two written tests: Module 1: written exam consisting of short-answer questions and exercises that will follow those previously carried out during the meetings with the Tutor. Exam date: April 15, 2020 Form 2: dissertation of max 2 pages to be delivered by May 29, 2020. The details on the dissertation requested will be illustrated at the beginning of the course. The paper can also be completed with the support of the Tutor during the dedicated meetings. Each test (exam and thesis) will be evaluated with a score from 0 to 30. The weighted average of the two scores (2/3 for Module 1; 1/3 for Module 2) will correspond to the final grade of the course, and can be registered from June 2020 and until the winter session of January-February 2021. The final mark can be calculated only if both tests are sufficient (score> = 18/30). If one of the two modules is not sufficient, the mark of the sufficient module can be kept. The insufficient module must be assessed through the written exam, and the final grade of the course will be the (weighted) average of the two marks.
