Programme

The course will focus on the main issues in public economics from both a domestic and European perspective. In particular, the following topics will be examined:

1. Public expenditure on the welfare state, with reference to the following areas: pension systems; healthcare; education; social assistance; anti-poverty programmes;
2. Government intervention in public utility services of an industrial nature and market regulation mechanisms;
3. The decentralization of taxation and expenditure responsibilities.

The following textbooks are required for the examination:

1. Bosi, P. (2023), *Corso di scienza delle finanze*, ninth edition, Il Mulino, Bologna, specifically the following chapters:

Chapter I, excluding Section 6;
Chapter V, excluding Section 5;
Chapter VII, excluding Sections 5 and 6;
Chapter VIII.

2. For students attending classes, additional or replacement materials may be provided by the lecturer during the course.

Type of evaluation

The examination consists of a written test with three open-ended questions covering the entire course syllabus. The grade awarded for the written test may be accepted without taking the oral examination. To be admitted to the oral examination, students must have passed the written test.
