The course aims to provide students with both theoretical and methodological tools enabling them to understand and analyze the role played by the media in modern society and in the social, cultural, and institutional transformations occurred over the last decades. By the end of the course, students are expected to have developed a full understanding of the main paradigms developed within different disciplines- with particular reference to sociology – in order to study the media, their languages, and audiences.

Programme

The first part of the course focuses on the models and forms of interpersonal communication and on the relationship between communication and social identity. In particular, the forms of pathological communication of everyday life and the social representations spread by media and social media will be analyzed.
The second part of the course introduces the main theoretical perspectives of communication and media and the empirical approaches to the study of the sociology of communication. This part will deal with audience development, social transformations and media effects. A specific focus will be on computer mediated communication (CMC) and new spaces for participation and content production due to digital media.

Type of delivery of the course

Teaching will be organized through lectures. In the case of an extension of the COVID-19 emergency, all the regulations about carrying out educational activities will be implemented. In particular, the following methods will be applied: the lessons will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform and the teaching materials will be made available to students on the Moodle platform.

Attendance

To allow all students enjoying the lessons, the slides of the lessons will be uploaded on the Moodle platform and, at the end of each lesson, video recordings will be made available on the Stream platform.

Type of evaluation

Written exam (2 hours of time) for both attending and non-attending students. The test is made up of three open-ended questions, each of which is assigned a score from 0 to 10 points. In the case of an extension of the COVID-19 emergency, all the regulations about student evaluating methods will be implemented.
