Programme

History of Italian Opera from Monteverdi to Puccini.
THERE WILL BE A GENERAL AND A MONOGRAPHIC PART. IN THE GENERAL ONE, THE EVOLUTION OF OPERA FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY (FUNDAMENTAL AUTHORS, DRAMATURGICAL PRINCIPLES AND DRAMATIC MUSICAL STRUCTURES) WILL BE TRACED. THE MONOGRAPHIC PART WILL ANALYZE THREE OPERAS FROM THE CLASSICAL REPERTOIRE OF ITALIAN OPERA, WHICH WILL BE INDICATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LESSONS AND SELECTED ALSO ON THE BASIS OF THE ARTISTIC SEASON OF THE OPERA DI ROMA.

STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THE LESSONS HAVE TO STUDY THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL BOOK:

Type of delivery of the course

The course is divided into 12 lectures, which will cover the following topics: - the origins of Opera - the Opera in Venice in the seventeenth century - the serious metastasian Opera in the early eighteenth century - the Opera seria after Metastasio - the Opera comica in the eighteenth century - Gluck's reform - Italian opera in the early nineteenth century - Giuseppe Verdi and the Opera of the second half of the 19th century - Puccini and the Giovane Scuola The three operas that are the subject of the monographic part will be also projected and commented.
