20710384 - AESTHETICS OF CINEMA AND MEDIA

The aim of the class is to give an overview of the more relevant issues of film and media aesthetics. In particular, the class will be focused on both historically relevant perspective and more recent topics and methodologies. Moreover, a major frame will be offered by visual culture studies, in order to understand old and new phenomena in the light of a wider history of images. A particular attention will be devoted to theories of sensory and affective cinematic and medial experience.

Programme

The aim of the course is to give an overview of the more relevant issues of visual culture in the frame of film and media aesthetics. In particular, the course will be focused on both historically relevant perspective and more recent topics and methodologies.
The program will be articulated around two main stages. In the first one, relevant issues of visual culture from XX century to date will be considered. In the second one, the works of Stanley Kubrick will be addressed, with a special focus on visual aesthetics.

Type of delivery of the course

The course is delivered through classroom-taught lessons with the use of slides and/or the screening of movies and videos. If possible and necessary, lessons will be also accessible online.

Attendance

The attendance is optional. However, also considering that the lessons are focused on close analysis, it is highly recommended.

Type of evaluation

The written exam consists of open questions. No intermediate tests.
