20711203 - Dance in video

The course examines the relationship between the art of movement and the movement of images, analyzing dance and video in cases of documentation of performances or artistic creation and their possible combinations. In the chronological span from the second half of the twentieth century to contemporary experiences, the course is based on the vision, the commentary and the study of the main cases of dance in video.
The objectives of the course are to trace a history of dance and performance of the last decades through video production, recognizing the elements of the single languages and those generated by their grafting. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the course aims at the acquisition of knowledge related to the intermediality of the languages of the scene and to the problems of the documentation of the performative experience.

Programme

The course intends to analyse the relationship between the movement of the body and the movement of images, exploring the dialogue between the language of dance and that of video in the range of relationships from documentation to artistic creation, from dance in film to images as a dramaturgical element. In the chronological span from the first decades of the 20th century to contemporary experiences, the module is based on the vision, analysis, commentary and study of some cases of interrelation between choreographic language and visual language. In particular, the theme of action in front of the camera will be examinated, exploring the differences between photography, cinema and video through some examples of choreographers, film-makers, video-artists.

A written paper commenting on and analyzing one or more films of your choice from those included in the videography will be required, to be handed in at least twenty days before the date of the exam. An oral exam on the general themes of the course will complete the evaluation
