20702695 - POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY

The course of Political Philosophy is part of the program in Philosophy (BA) and it is included among the basic training activities. The Course provides an introduction to the main authors in Political philosophy. Each year the Course will focus on one specific author. Students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge in class debates and argumentations both from a theoretical and a historical-philosophical perspective. The Course is intended to the acquisition of analytical and interpretative conceptual tools in Political philosophy, both in reading and in debating. At the end of the course the student will acquire:
-) Ability to analyze and interpret philosophical texts;
-) Properties of language and argumentation;
-) Ability to contextualize the acquired knowledge in the Philosophical debate.

Programme

The Course will continue its in-depth exploration of materialism, considered as a philosophical approach and practice.
For the academic year 2025-26, the intention is to articulate the materialist philosophical approach by focusing in particular on the criteria of knowledge production, functions, and their relative status of legitimacy/illegitimacy.

Attendance

Given the in-depth analyses conducted during the lectures, attendance is recommended. Upon motivated request, remote attendance is possible.

Type of evaluation

For those who have attended the course, it is possible to submit a written paper according to the following guidelines: Minimum length: 30,000 characters Submission: one week before the chosen exam date, by sending the file to: federica.giardini@uniroma3.it The syllabus is valid for three years. For Erasmus students: where available, you can refer tothe English edition of the selected text of the course programme. In the evaluation of the exam, the determination of the final grade will take into account: Level and quality of knowledge of the topics; Ability to analyze a theme critically; Structure of the arguments; Ability to apply theories and concepts to contexts; Use of vocabulary appropriate to the discipline under study.
