The aim of the class is to give an overview of the more relevant issues of film and media aesthetics. In particular, the class will be focused on both historically relevant perspective and more recent topics and methodologies. Moreover, a major frame will be offered by visual culture studies, in order to understand old and new phenomena in the light of a wider history of images. A particular attention will be devoted to theories of sensory and affective cinematic and medial experience.

The course aims to provide an overview of important filmological and mediological issues by considering their aesthetic, cultural and theoretical-methodological aspects. In particular, it will consider both historically relevant authors and trends and more recent problems in relation to the topic of audiovisual storytelling. No particular prerequisite is asked for. However, basic skills in film analysis will be provided during the classes. Lessons will focus on general narratological issues and storytelling strategies in the U.S. audiovisual, with a focus on the cinema of Francis Ford Coppola.Core Documentation
