Programme

In light of the close interrelation between music and visual arts within the historical Avant-garde and the second Avant-garde, the module will analyze the shared aesthetic concepts, with particular regard to the reception of the poetics of Impressionism and Symbolism by Claude Debussy, and of Paul Klee's work by Pierre Boulez. A monographic analysis will be dedicated to the incidental music composed by Claude Debussy for Le martyre de Saint Sébastien (1911), a 'mystery play' written by Gabriele d'Annunzio.
