The course is designed: a) to deepen understanding of theories (i.e. Delsarte, Jaques-Dalcroze and Laban); b) to increase ability to observe dance - its movement, its compositional components - as well as stylistic codes and modes of expression.

Programme
The course intends to investigate some nodal experiences of 20th century dance that have proposed an unprecedented conception of the body and movement and regenerated the language of dance in a two-way dialogue between East and West, and between tradition and innovation. The approach of theatre anthropology will provide the tools for analysing such a dialogue. Two in-depth studies will be devoted to the Western scene of the first half of the century (especially observing it through the influence of Asian dances and rituals), and to Butō, Japan's post-war avant-garde (with particular attention to second-generation experiences).A part of the course will be held in conjunction with the Teatri di vetro festival, and will be dedicated to the contemporary scene and to direct observation through the guided viewing of performances and meetings with performers and cultural operators.
